Project Description

“WE CAN NOW EASILY RUN THE SYSTEM AS A ONE PERSON SHED WHICH GIVES US ALL MORE TIME OFF.” – Katrina and David Pearson, Purua Whangarei

Another very happy MilktechNZ® user! Based in Purua Whangarei, Katrina and David Pearson are equity partners with Katrina’s mum and dad, Richard and Sharron Booth, where they milk 480 cows through their 50 unit rotary.
The day to day operation is run by Katrina with David working off farm with his own electrical business. Calving is carried out in autumn. The farm is half flat and half hills. “With the Northland climate, wet winters and dry summers can add some challenges”, Katrina says.
After leaving school Katrina worked on the farm for a couple of years before joining the police force for 10 years, then returning back to her roots. Katrina obviously has a special gift and was the Northland Share Farmer of the Year at the 2021 Dairy Industry Awards.
Katrina said, “installing MilktechNZ® equipment was not a hard decision to make after seeing what else was out there. Having a system that is still New Zealand owned, developed and manufactured was important to our decision. Also the ability to change our milking parameters during the season to suit our herd at certain times of their lactation is great. We run the system using MaxT so take off is determined by either milk flow, time or platform position – whatever comes first.”
“We can now easily run the system as a one person shed which gives us all more time off. Another big plus is the ability to be more productive by getting other jobs done during milking times. Finding good labour can have its challenges. We believe having cup removers has helped us retain great staff that love working with the equipment. Having a happy and reliable team is very important to a successful business.”
Away from the farm Katrina and David and their two girls, Emily and Charlotte, love to go into the remote bush after deer (usually by helicopter) or out fishing on their boat.
A big thank you from all the team at MilktechNZ®.
